Mitch Allee (owner, CEO), Jim Patterson (president), and Dave Beadle (chief pilot) established Allegiant Air in January 1997 as WestJet Express. After a trademark dispute with Rapid City, South Dakota's West Jet Air Center, and the airline's realization that the name was too similar to Calgary, Alberta's WestJet Airlines, the company changed its name to Allegiant Air on June 19, 1998.
